What is Buddhism?
Buddhism is a path of practice and spiritual development which leads to 'Enlightenment', insight into the true meaning of life. Buddhism started with the Buddha, who was born as Siddhartha Gautama in about 480BCE/BC. He did not claim to be a god and he has never been thought of as such by Buddhists. He was a human being who, through tremendous effort, transformed himself and achieved Enlightenment, which all Buddhists also hope to achieve. Because Buddhism does not include the idea of worshipping a god or gods, many people in the West do not see it as a religion in the accepted sense. There are about 350 million Buddhists in the world.
