" I HAVE A DREAM..."
DR MARTIN LUTHER KING Jnr
Martin Luther King Jnr [1929-1968] was a Black-American Baptist minister. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, he attended Morehouse College. During this period he decided to become a minister of religion, so he studied theology. At this time he  became acquainted with the writings of Mahatma Gandhi.
In 1954 he became the pastor [or minister] of Dextor Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. He was chosen to lead a boycott of the city's segregated buses in 1955 which led to such segregation laws being judged as unconstitutional. King then founded the Southern Christian  Leadership Conference to co-ordinate civil rights activities in 1957. This led to many campaigns against the segregation of whites and blacks in the 1960s.
In 1964 he received the Nobel Peace Prize. Following Gandhi's example, King insisted on a campaign of non-violence. He was assassinated in April 1968 in Memphis Tennessee.  In the US the third Monday in January every year is celebrated as
'Martin Luther King Day.'
